Photography - my love affair with life

Dear Reader

Today I will be sharing with you another side to who I am ... I love to document moments and time with photography.
I am not a 'professional' photographer but have been paid in the past for my services.

I photograph things because I love it and I love to watch people.  I feel it's important to capture the small moments in time and use them to tell a story of what was happening in the moment.

I kind of fell into photography when I had what I think of as 'a mini break down' in the job that I was doing at the time.
I told my husband I couldn't do it anymore and (with his support) I up and quit what I was doing.  Not because I didn't love it any more, but because I was tired, worn out and needed a change (that's a story for another time).
At the time I had no idea what I was going to do and my husband decided that a camera would be a great birthday present.

Oh - I grabbed that camera and ran with it!
I remember one day having a 'proper' wedding photographer come to our house to 'interview' me to see if I was good enough to be his second camera for weddings.  This man looked at me and smiled (in the most condescending way) and said - "When you get a real camera get back to me".
Well I'd like to let that twat know that I photographed a number of weddings with my first automatic digital camera, thank you very much - and every single couple was happy with what they got. (I think - they paid up anyway!?)

Eventually I managed to get a more appropriate camera (one that could actually change lenses!) and I was away and running.

I loved photographing people's special moments and I feel so humbled by the fact that these people allowed me to be such an important part of their memory making.  I recall one wedding where there were only 6 guests - I was number 6! I didn't know them at all before they booked me and I left feeling I was a part of their whanau.

Eventually I expanded out and photographed different occasions - birthday parties, wedding anniversaries, family reunions, get togethers & parties, as well as family photo shoots.
I always made sure I was available to photograph weddings for friends and ex-students (years of teaching has given me a huge pool of peeps in this category) My main aim was to make sure that people could get quality photos to document these moments without having to pay ridiculous fees.  Often it was my wedding present to the happy couple.  This is something I have been knocked back for by 'proper' photographers over the years because I was 'stealing' their jobs and lowering the value of their trade.  Hmm - I don't know about that but each to their own I suppose.

Each photo tells a story and they all have so much meaning behind them - for their subjects and for  the photographer.

Slowly I became busy in my main mahi and photography fell to the side.  I no longer photograph weddings and I only really take photos on my iphone now (because technology has advanced so much and the quality of pics on my iphone are amazing!)

I still love photography and will often stop in my track to take a picture of something that others usually will over look.  I think once you have that 'photographers eye' you never really look at the world the same again.

I have been tasked with the job of capturing what I see to share with the world - and it is one that I gladly accept.
